Hiking Checklist: What to Pack Before Heading Out
Before I head out on the trails here at Millican […]
Before I head out on the trails here at Millican Reserve or parts unknown, I like to make sure I’m prepared for anything I might encounter. My backpack of supplies is my secret to an enjoyable hike without any hiccups. If you’re wondering what to bring with you on your next adventure, consider some of the following tips I always keep in mind when packing for a hike.
Here’s a breakdown of the essentials you should pack before setting foot on a trail:
Footwear and Clothing
Always be sure to check the weather before you head out for a hike. Don’t get caught on the trails during a cold front without a coat! A hat is a must-have item in all seasons to regulate your temperature and keep the sun out of your face. No matter the weather, be sure to invest in sturdy, well-fitted hiking boots or shoes that provide support and traction for varying terrains. Rocky or technical trails are more demanding on your feet and ankles than a flat path through a grassy meadow. Pair your footwear with moisture-wicking socks to prevent blisters and keep your feet dry.
Navigation Tools
Even if you’re familiar with the trail, having a navigation tool is essential. Many trail maps can be found using apps such as TrailForks or AllTrails. In areas with adequate cell service, these applications can track your movement along the trail to ensure you stay on path. Don’t expect to always have service though- it’s always a good idea to download a version of the trail map for offline access and keep a portable charger handy.
Backpack Essentials
A good backpack to carry all your gear is vital. Ensure it’s comfortable and has enough capacity for your critical items. Here’s what you should pack in your bag:
- Water: Stay hydrated! It’s recommended to pack one liter of water per hour you expect to spend on a trail.
- Healthy snacks: Pack lightweight, high-energy snacks, like energy bars, fruits, or trail mix.
- First aid kit: Include bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, itch relief creams, and any personal medications in the kit.
- Flashlight: If you expect to be hiking after sunset, a flashlight or head lamp can keep you aware of your surroundings and help others on the trails see you.
Safety First!
Prioritizing safety is nonnegotiable when venturing into the great outdoors. It’s easy to overlook this, especially if you’re heading out for an “easy” day-hike (I have been guilty of this myself!). But in case of an emergency, having a communication device is crucial. Always carry a fully charged cellphone and a portable charger to ensure you don’t lose the ability to communicate. And bring personal identification and a list of emergency contacts, including local authorities’ numbers.
Extra Tips
Another thing that’s easy to forget, but will inevitably cause regret if you do, is to always (always) carry and regularly apply sunscreen and protect yourself from bites with an insect repellent. And, of course, always throw out all your trash, stay on designated trails, and respect wildlife to preserve the natural environment for future hikers. Take nothing but pictures and leave nothing but footprints!
